GENERAL INFO

WHERE DOES THE EVENT TAKE PLACE?

Tidewater Falls is located about 30 miles inland of the Oregon Coast near the town of Tidewater, OR. Driving there takes ~2.5 hours from Portland or Eugene, ~3.5 hours from Bend or Hood River, ~5.5 hours from Ashland or Seattle and ~10.5 hours from SF or Vancouver, BC. Precise driving directions will be posted closer to the event.

WILL WE HAVE TO SCHLEP OUR GEAR FAR TO OUR CAMPSITES?

No.

WHEN CAN WE ARRIVE? WHEN DO WE HAVE TO LEAVE?

General participation gates open at 12:00 PM on Thursday, July 31st. The gates will be locked each day after the scheduled time. Please do not arrive at any time when the gates are closed on any day of the festival. Please review the Box Office/Gate schedule.

If you want to be close to the site when the gates are not open, there are campgrounds and hotels nearby. All vehicles and people must leave the venue by Sunday, August 3rd, at 2:00 PM. Please review the gate schedule, and plan to arrive during hours when the gate is open. Vehicles and patrons that arrive when the gates are closed will not be permitted onsite until the gate opens the following day.

Why are there such firmly defined arrival times?

We have learned that part of building a safe and sacred container for community and creativity is getting everyone on site, and on the same page as early as possible. The arrival cut-off times also allow the volunteers who handle the check-in process to step away from mundane concerns, and to enter undistracted into the magical realms of deep relationship and inventiveness we come for in the first place!

LOCATION/DIRECTIONS

Tidewater Falls is located ~2.5 hours from Portland or Eugene, ~5.5 hours from Ashland or Seattle and ~10.5 hours from SF or Vancouver, BC. It is near the town of Tidewater, OR http://images.belovedfestival.com/beloved-directions.pdf  Download a print-ready .pdf of Driving Directions.

If you are coming from the south, we highly recommend stopping to refuel and for a snack at our favorite solar powered Biofuels station, SeQuential Biofuels, located just off of I-5 in Eugene at 86714 McVay Highway. It is the first all-biofuel and biofuel-blend fueling station in the nation. They offer biofuel and biofuel blends for every vehicle with no conversion required.

We highly encourage everyone to carpool!

Disabilities

The private campground used for the event has buildings and terrain that may pose substantial barriers to people with mobility challenges (the terrain is hilly). If you have questions about the facilities, please contact us at registration@illumination.org.in.

Health Concerns

This camping event is held about 14 miles from the nearest emergency medical services facility. Please use your best judgment to determine whether you have any medical conditions that should prevent you from attending the event.

Safety and Security

We hold the intention for our community to come together in emotional and physical safety. Should any dangerous or disruptive behaviors threaten the security or harmony of the Gathering, we will address them quickly and appropriately with the goal of restoring and maintaining safety.

The venue's staff and the Gathering's organizers reserve the right to expel any participant, without refund, due to unsafe or disruptive behavior.

FOOD

We will have one well-known healthy food vendor onsite serving two hearty meals per day. You need to purchase your meal plan in advance! Our goal is to work out a deal so that organic ingredients and reusable serving materials are used. Our goal is to offer a vegan/veggie/gluten-free meal plan with a limited amount of animal protein. We suggest that you supplement, and bring extra to share. We request that everyone brings your own cup/bowl/plate/utensils. We request that everyone brings healthy snacks for the nighttime food altar:

  • oranges
  • apples
  • bananas
  • nuts
  • chips, etc...

What are "Service Groups" and do I have to participate?

Sacred Fire Circle Gatherings are deeply participatory, as they are co-created from the commitments and contributions of service each of us makes. It takes the whole community to assemble and maintain sacred and functional spaces (the sacred circle, the food and water altars, the fire, etc), and to return the site to its original state before we depart. All participants are expected to do their fair share of cleaning on the last day. When you register, you'll be asked to join a Service Group.

FAMILIES/KIDS

kidsplaytimeIllumination is a Family Friendly event. With that said, this event is designed to support serious personal spiritual/empowerment work/growth. Accordingly, we request that parents who bring children to this event commit to supervising their children so that their youthful energy will not infringe upon the community's serious spiritual work while in the circle and the venue-wide "quiet" sleep hours of 8am - noon and 8pm -11pm.

There will be a specific camping area for families with children. Youth 16 and under are free. Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult and we strongly encourage parents and friends to join us in our fun.

We also plan to have activities "within" the circle for attending children – because all attendees deserve this honor. For more info contact: family@illumination.org.in

WILL YOU POST A DOWNLOADABLE EVENT SCHEDULE?

Yes. However, the basic schedule is rather simple and smaller additions/changes won't be made and posted till you are onsite:

  • The Registration booth is open for all participants on Thursday and Friday from noon till 8pm. Please plan to arrive only during these times.
  • The all-night Sacred Fires will occur on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Playshops happen daily from 1-4pm.
  • Dinner is at 6-7pm, followed immediately by evening presentations
  • Nap time is 8-11pm.
  • Ceremonial participants and ritual tech team members generally arrive at the circle between 30 and 60 minutes before the eveningís journey begins.
  • The Journey usually starts at midnight; sometimes at 11pm. Please arrive several minutes beforehand so you don't interrupt the opening.
  • The Journey ends at sunrise.
  • Nap time is 8am – Noon.
  • Brunch is Noon-1pm.
  • Fire Circle "Vanishing Ritual" – a community cleanup project – happens at sunrise on Sunday morning.
  • Everyone is expected to leave the venue by 2pm Sunday. This should give you time to take a nap before driving.

WHAT TYPES OF FOOD VENDORS WILL BE ON HAND?

We will have one well-known healthy food vendor onsite serving two hearty meals per day. If you want to participate in the meal plan you need to purchase it in advance! Our goal is to work out a deal so that organic ingredients and reusable serving materials are used. Our goal is to offer a vegan/veggie/gluten-free meal plan with a limited amount of animal protein. We suggest that you supplement, and bring extra to share. We request that everyone brings our own cup/bowl/plate/utensils. We request that everyone brings healthy snacks for the nighttime food altar (oranges, apples, bananas, nuts, chips, etc).

Do I have to purchase the Meal Plan?

The meal plan is completely optional. With this in mind please consider that this event happens at a rugged camping venue, so it may be way more efficient for you to purchase the meal plan (especially if you are flying to the event) than to deal with feeding yourself. The meal plan is being designed with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options and we will endeavor to serve gluten-free options as well. We also encourage that everyone bring healthy food to contribute to the late night food/snack altar.

Fire Circle Safety

To maintain a sacred and safe space, we ask that you:

  • Do not smoke in the fire circle area or discard cigarette butts in the fire.
  • Do not put trash into the fire at any time.
  • Do not remove burning sticks from the fire.
  • Do not jump the fire.
  • Do not attempt fire walking.
  •

ALL NIGHT LONG FIRE CIRCLES?! WHEN AND WHERE DO WE SLEEP?

handsdrummingThe all-night Fire Circle ritual is perhaps the oldest human spiritual/communal/sacred tradition. We will continue to unabashedly support our culture's newest expression of this legacy. The tradition at Fire Circle retreats is that the entire community observes a "quiet time" policy between 8am and noon and then 8pm and 11pm. Most people adapt to this sleep schedule right after their first all-night fire – you may be amazed by this. In addition, we have a tradition that most participants make small "nests" just outside the Fire Circle, so that you have a place upon which to lie down, take a cat nap, recharge. This way, you will still be directly connected to the energy and flow of the Circle and can jump back in when spirit calls.

Photography

Please do not use cameras, recorders, or other audio/visual recording equipment at any of the Fire Circles. At other times, please get permission from the people you'd like to photograph or record. Do not post any event photos online without explicit permission from the people in your photos.

How can I arrange a ride to the Gathering site?

The Gathering site is a fair distance up the mountain from the Portland and/or Eugene airports. To arrange shuttles from the Portland/Eugene airports or to arrange ride-sharing with other community members, we recommend you join the Illumination E-Group and network with other attendees to find a ride, share a rental car, or share a shuttle ride.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Plenty! Illumination is a unique experience – the more you know, the more you can add to and get out of the event. Please take the time to thoroughly read through this detailed site so that you know what to expect and what we expect of you.  In particular, the Resourcery section of this website has a wealth of fascinating information.

WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN?

A limited number of children - 6 years old and under - can attend for free. A limited number of discounted tickets may be purchased for children between the ages of 6 and 12.

BOX OFFICE HOURS/GATE

WILL TICKETS BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE GATE/BOX OFFICE?

No. Tickets and the meal plan are only available for purchase before the event.

CAN I GET A ONE-DAY PASS?

No. This event is designed as an immersive, three-night-long intentional empowerment journey. You will get way more out of this event by participating in all three fires and we therefore "heartily" advise that you arrange your schedule accordingly.

I BOUGHT A TICKET AND CANNOT ATTEND. CAN I GET A REFUND? CAN I TRANSFER IT TO SOMEONE I GIFT/SELL IT TO?

While we don't offer refunds or credits for future years, we do encourage you to sell or gift the tickets. Our tickets are bar-coded for scan/validation onsite, so they're each good for one use regardless of who paid for them in our system or the name printed on them. You do need to transfer the ticket into another person's name unless the ticket was arranged for will call pickup.

WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?

This is a "rain or shine" event. We have successfully produced Sacred Fire Circles in Hawaii during torrential downpours! With that said, expect beautiful mid-summer Oregon weather.

CAMPING QUESTIONS

This event is unusual for many people in that we stay up all night long and then sleep during the morning and early evening. Therefore, it is critical that you plan to either find a shady spot in which to set up your camp or bring extra shade cloth/tarps so that you won't roast in the hot Oregon sun while trying to sleep during the day. Summer temperatures and weather vary widely in Oregonís coastal range. You should plan to bring hot, cold, dry and wet clothing and camping gear. Layering is a good strategy.

We heartily suggest that you bring "silicone" earplugs (MUCH better than foam ear plugs) and eyeshades for better daytime sleeping. Silicone earplugs are available in most drug stores in the ear/swimmer's section. You might also want to bring an extra empty wide-mouthed jar with a tight lid so you donít have to leave your tent for mid-sleep time pit stops ;-)

Don't wander in the woods–poison oak is not friendly!

Please bring your own cup/plate/bowl/utensils and refillable water bottle (water will be available onsite). Please bring healthy snack food for yourself and to share via the food altar.

There is a long-standing tradition in the Fire Circle community of sharing water squeeze bottles WITHOUT TOUCHING OUR LIPS TO THE BOTTLE. This way we can share without getting each other sick. Also, when sharing food, please wash your hands first!

Fashion-wise: there is a non-obligatory fashion tradition in the Alchemical Fire Circle community in which participants wear black clothing on Thursday night, white clothing on Friday night and red clothing on Saturday night in order to align with the three primary phases of the alchemical process. With that said, please don't feel obligated to abide by this tradition – as we empower every attendee to dress for success as each of us sees/feels fit.

This event offers three types of camping:

a) General Tent Camping – Pack it in, pack it out. No open fires please.

b) Family Camping – a place for those with children to camp.

c)  Car/RV Camping – There are a limited number of car camping spots. There are a limited number of RV parking spots – but they DO NOT come with power/water hookups. These camp spots will be closer to the front gate. Please do not camp further into the venue if you plan to leave the venue before the event is over on Sunday.
To register your RV contact: registration@illumination.org.in.

WILL WE HAVE TO CARRY OUR GEAR FAR TO OUR CAMPSITES?

No.

WE SLEEP DURING THE DAY?  WILL THERE BE ENOUGH SHADED CAMPING FOR EVERYONE?

Yes. Tidewater Falls has great shaded spots. Just be sure to not camp in/around poison oak!

WHAT AMENITIES WILL YOU BE PROVIDING AT THE CAMPGROUNDS?

This is a fairly rustic camping venue. There will be clean water faucets and portable toilets. We are working on offering showers.  Please bring camping gear, eating gear (bowl/plate/utensils).

I'm Planning to Also Attend Beloved Festival at the same venue.  Can I stay onsite between events?

No. However, there are numerous campgrounds nearby and we are working to arrange a relationship with one such venue so that the segue between these two events is comfortable, convenient and affordable.

HOW DO I SUBMIT MY BAND, PLAYSHOPS, PERFORMANCE, VENDING BOOTH, ARTWORK, ETC. FOR INCLUSION IN THE FESTIVAL?

This event is not a festival, and therefore operates differently. We "all" make the music, offer playshops, set up and break down the fire circle together. Accordingly, no paid openings are available for bands, etc.  We are allowing a limited amount of very low-key vending.  If interested, contact: registration@illumination.org.in

I WANT TO VOLUNTEER. HOW CAN I DO THIS?

This event is different than typical festivals in that its culture is founded upon a participatory ethic. In other words, we get the love we give. We all help setup and break down the fire circle, we all wash our own dishes, we all take turns making sure the drummers have water to drink, etc. This ethic is part of what helps to elevate the vibe of the experience. With that stated, we have made approximately a handful of work-trade positions available for more involved production work. However, the chances are that by the time you read this all of the volunteer positions have already been filled. For more info contact: registration@illumination.org.in.

WHO CAN HELP ME IF I AM HAVING CHALLENGES ORDERING TICKETS?

If are having trouble purchasing your tickets through the website, or if you have any ticket-related questions, please call or send an email to: tickets@illumination.org.in.

THE FIRE CIRCLE, ART, SPIRIT, COMMUNITY

The Resourcery Pages on this website offer a slew of information about Fire Circle technology, history, philosophy.  Check it out!

How can I best prepare for the Fire Circle?

Many seasoned Sacred Fire Circle celebrants begin shifting their sleeping/waking schedule in the days leading up to the Gathering. You are encouraged to arrive rested! In addition to making it easy on yourself by getting on the optional meal plan, you might consider bringing energy foods and drinks to supplement your diet. Drink LOTS of water. If possible, arrange your schedule to have a day off between the Gathering and returning to work.

Are alcoholic beverages allowed at the Gathering?

This gathering is alcohol and drug-free. Keeping inebriants out of the Circle allows us to be of best support to each and every participant as we invoke and embody our most empowered selves.

What is all this stuff about "alchemy" anyway?

Alchemy is the art and science of transmuting lead into gold. In many alchemical traditions, the element of fire is used to accelerate transformation. Some sacred fire circles are based on this metaphor. The Illumination Fire Circle draws part of its  template from the alchemical fire circle format. In turn, the Illumination community often uses alchemy as a metaphor to help describe the processes many people experience as they engage with themselves, each other and spirit throughout the night, as well as over the course of the weekend. Because Alchemy describes psychological processes in symbolic terms, we have found it a useful bridge for people with diverse backgrounds and beliefs. More detailed information on alchemy as it relates to the Gathering is available in the article  Fire Circle Alchemy.

I would like to have a special ritual (hand-fasting, wedding, rite of passage) at the next Gathering. Is that okay? Who should I contact?

The occasional special ritual you may have heard about or attended at a previous Sacred Fire Circles most likely would have been organized by long-term members of our community. There are some constraints about when and where such special occasions may be held. For more information, please contact info@illumination.org.in with details about your request.

Music, Chants and Instruments

Is this a structured process, guided by facilitators, or can I share my favorite songs, rhythms or dances?

The magic of our fires is deeply rooted in the spontaneous nature of how each circle unfolds. Your songs, rhythms and dances are certainly welcome! Our entire Gathering is a safe container full of people willing to witness, embrace and participate with your offerings. The only pre-planned elements are the nightly fire lighting rituals and the solar salutation ceremony at dawn. With that stated, there are certain sensibilities that, over the course of many fire circles, we have found make best sense to embrace. We usually offer songs to the circle in a call-and-response fashion. We usually sing songs in the primary local dialect (which in this case is English), and/or we offer an English explanation of song lyrics, so that our fellow participants know exactly what we are invoking through our songs. Please explore to learn about just some of the many songs that people bring to the fire.  A cappella vocals, beatboxing, overtoning, jazz scat improv, speaking/singing in tongues and other such wordless offerings are also heartily welcome in the circle. So long as your creative offerings are made with sensitivity to the group-at-large, bring it on!

Is there a CD or songbook available, so I can learn some of the chants before the Gathering?

Sound samples (in MP3 format) and the lyrics for nearly 100 chants may be accessed online by joining the  Fire Tribe Chants eGroup. There are also links to other websites that offer lyrics and MP3s of chants popular in our circles on the Related Links page.

I play a frame drum and I'm often drowned out in typical drum circle by djembes and dunduns – will there be opportunities to play and be heard?

There is an incredible variety of drumming styles at Illumination, and we work hard to create a community wide mindset of sensitivity which values and encourages softer instruments and voices. We even have developed a language – a set of simple cues ñ for quickly communicating with each other in the circle, so that we can adapt to whatever musical offerings are emerging, so that we give each other full support in being heard.  For more info on this check out the alchemical rhythmatism article in the Resourcery section of this website.

dianehandsdrumShould I bring my guitar (flute, accordion, saxophone, etc.)?

Instruments of all kinds are welcome! Musicians who play melody-based instruments (guitars, for example) are encouraged to jam and share songs throughout the day. Instrumentation at the fire circle is predominantly focused on percussive and ambient sound offerings, though a careful, patient, and crafty melody player will sometimes find a few delicious moments of exploration at the fire circle. The key to this kind of participation is sensitivity to the flow of energy and rhythm that is already present. We tend to focus of voice and acoustic percussion (drums, shakers, rattles) and ambient/drone (bells, singing bowls, didgeridoos) instruments. Certain acoustic instruments such as flutes can be a beautiful and supportive addition to the mix. Instruments such as guitars and keyboards are rarely played in the circle. The best advice we can offer is; conscious listening and thoughtful discretion are the best strategies for determining how best to add your gifts to the circle. If youíre not sure about how to offer your musical gifts to the circle, watch, listen and ask our facilitators. We are dedicated to everyone finding their voice in the circle in ways that synergize with the collective voice of the Gathering.

ecoethics thmbECO ETHICS

One of our primary aims for Illumination is to champion new ways to honor and respect our planet in crisis while we celebrate our ever-present connection with her. That said, we must be honest that it is challenging to make 200 person camping retreats 100% "green." We do not take lightly that we are asking many people to make a carbon footprint by traveling to and participating in this event. Our goal is that Illumination not only reduce it's negative ecological impact, but aim for the event to have a net positive effect on the battered Oregon Coastal Range ecosystem and on our planet's ability to survive the many and constant threats to her life. We are making special efforts to minimize our impact and to use these efforts as an educational platform for all participants.

WHAT WE INVITE YOU TO BRING

We invite you to bring your "A Game" to this very special gathering. In other words: hundreds of previous fire circle experiences have taught us that when participants bring their best attitude, intention, presence, commitment to living our own healthiest and most prosperous truths, as a well as a commitment to supporting the collective – that the vibe of these events consistently manifest at truly profound and magical level.

Come prepared to take responsibility for your own experience and for your impact on the land and the others present.

Please generate as little waste as possible and adopt a leave-no-trace ethic. Pack-it-in & pack-it-out.

Sort all of your waste if you use our recycling/composting facilities.

Please bring your own containers for water and eating plates, bowls, utensils.

Please renew your dedication to your own chosen personal development practices, whatever they may be, before you come to the event. You will most likely get a lot more out of this Gathering if you make a special effort to engage in personal cultivation work in the days leading up to this event.

Please don't take yourself too seriously – "Sacred" events are usually much more delightful and rewarding when we embrace humor and compassion as part of a spiritual process ;-)

Find ways to see the beloved in everyone you meet and see at the Gathering.

Illumination Gathering - Event Rules

Safety and Security

We have instituted the following rules in order to support our community in co-creating this Gathering in emotional and physical safety. Thank you for honoring this!

What Not to Bring

  • Alcohol.
  • Illegal substances of any sort.
  • Firearms, explosives, or fireworks.
  • Pets.

Merchants

The Illumination Gathering has no formal vending area/opportunities. The producers of this event maintain the right to prohibit the vending of any and all merchandise and/or services at our events. In the event that we do allow energy/bodywork (massage, reiki, etc), these services must comply with Oregon State law. Email participation@illumination.org.in with any questions you may have about selling goods, wares or services.

Health Concerns

This camping event is held 14 miles from the nearest emergency medical services facility. Please use your best judgment to determine whether you have any medical conditions that should prevent you from attending the Gathering.

Healing Work on Others

Due to the spiritual nature of this event we encourage participants to engage in spiritual/psychological/emotional/wellness self-healing work as it can be done without causing danger to ones’ self or others. Because the contemporary Fire Circle movement-at-large has experienced a variety of healing and wellness practices in which healers do work on individuals other than themselves, and because we also exist in a litigious society-at-large, we must act to prevent harm. However, this event is not currently set up to formally endorse and/or facilitate healing work on others. Therefore, the producers of this event reserve the right to prohibit such work as we deem it unsafe, inappropriate and/or distracting to the event focus/intention. With that stated, we can offer the following basic principles of integrity for those who do healing work on others:

• To only work by clearly articulated consent.

• To work in sacred alliance with Spirit, and to be informed and guided by that Source, and not the healer’s own ego, in offering service to others.

• To do no harm and to avoid any sexual misconduct.

• To maintain the privacy of those being worked on.

• To avoid doing work in the circle in a manner that is distracting to the work being done by the group-at-large.

• To abide by state and federal laws and the rules and guidelines of the event venue and the event promoters.

Disabilities

The private campground used for the Gathering has buildings and terrain that may pose substantial barriers to people with mobility challenges. If you have questions about the facilities, please contact us at participation@illumination.org.inand we will gladly put you in touch with the campground administrators.

Inebriation

The Illumination Gathering is intended as a family-friendly event, in safe and sacred space. Together, we embark on journeys of transformation through purification, temperance, and sustained creative engagement. While we understand that the use of alcohol and other substances may be a part of an individual's spiritual practice, our intention is that the adventures that we create are substance-free. The interactive, improvisational nature of our events is best served by a crystal-clear, attentive and open participation that is unaffected by inebriation. Toward this end, inebriated individuals may be asked to depart. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.

*MEDIA POLICY STRICTLY ENFORCED*

At all of our events, you MUST get permission from the individuals involved BEFORE taking their picture, or recording them via any media whatsoever. ABSOLUTELY NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR RECORDING is permitted during rituals/ceremony (taking daytime photos in/of the circle is allowed with permission). Furthermore, the on-line posting of media captured at the event is also strictly prohibited without the prior consent of all individuals in any such media. Anyone not in alignment with this policy will be required to depart the event without refund/credit.
